The Undraped Artist Podcast
A professional artist interviews his peers about their craft, career path, and mindset, with occasional deep dives into art history.
A mix of long-form interviews with contemporary representational artists and educational lectures on art history. In the interviews, host Jeff Hein explores his guest's origin story, technical process, and the mindset required to sustain an art career. The historical episodes feature Hein in conversation with art historian Dr. Micah Christensen, analyzing the lives and work of master artists.
“The host is an accomplished peer to his guests, enabling conversations that go beyond surface-level talking points into the details of technique, business, and personal struggle. The show's dual format, which alternates between interviews with living artists and historical deep dives with an art historian, is also a unique feature.”
Who hosts this show
Jeff Hein is a full-time representational artist who began his professional career in 2002. He started the podcast to have the conversations with great living artists that he wished he could have had when he was starting out. Hein's own work includes portraits, multi-figure narratives, and still-life paintings, and his art is held in collections by prominent figures and institutions. He founded the Hein Atelier of Traditional Art in Salt Lake City in 2007, where he teaches naturalist painting techniques to apprentices.

What you'll be asked on this show
Jeff Hein often opens interviews by establishing a guest's current work or a recent achievement before rewinding to their origin story. He probes with direct, often surprised-sounding follow-up questions ("Wait a minute...", "How is he your greatest influence?") and shares his own parallel experiences to build camaraderie. He frequently explores the guest's non-obvious influences and the specific mindset required to overcome creative and career hurdles. The conversations are long-form and allow guests ample time to tell detailed stories without interruption.
The show alternates between two primary formats: one-on-one interviews with artists and co-hosted art history discussions with Dr. Micah Christensen. In interviews, Hein is a relaxed, curious host who uses his own experiences to build rapport. In the historical discussions, he often acts as an audience proxy, asking clarifying questions to unpack complex topics.
